Gentoo emerge config files in etc need updating

and leave my installation open to goodness only knows what  Well, I took the bull by the horns and did it  ; CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" in /etc/So, next time I update the Portage tree and emerge --update world, I'll know.

I'm actually having a lot of fun with this Gentoo and it works so well.

After looking at the info in "emerge --help config" I run, bash-2.05b# find /etc -iname '._cfg????

_*' /etc/._cfg0000_inputrc /etc/._cfg0000_/etc/._cfg0000_/etc/._cfg0000_make.globals /etc/._cfg0000_DIR_COLORS /etc/conf.d/._cfg0000_net /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_consolefont /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_checkfs /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_domainname /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_keymaps /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_net.eth0 /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_modules /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_clock /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_hdparm /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_bootmisc /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_serial /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_checkroot /etc/._cfg0000_services /etc/._cfg0000_fstab /etc/._cfg0000_group /etc/._cfg0000_hosts /etc/._cfg0000_issue /etc/._cfg0000_/etc/._cfg0000_shells ********************************************************** Now, this is where my questions come in.

I've emerged Wine and it runs almost every Windows app I use, but when it was finished compiling, it said that 4 files in /etc need updating. This is a normal part of gentoo emerge -u man, *dont* use #2 on a regular basis, thats how i totally screwed up my system a few months back. #1 will just overwrite the old file and #3 will allow you to merge the files so you dont lose _anything_ you might need.

In /etc/I added: CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/._cfg0000_/etc/._cfg0000_make.globals /etc/._cfg0000_etc-update.conf"but now what? have phun-phex one[text was edited by author 2003-02-12 ]How do you keep it from overwriting the changes you do want (ie added USE= variables) ?

gentoo emerge config files in etc need updating-64gentoo emerge config files in etc need updating-80

How to do this correctly I'm unsure of and want confirmation of, please. After an "emerge" is completed I get this message: * IMPORTANT: 47 config files in /etc need updating.* IMPORTANT: 7 config files in /usr/lib/X11/xkb need updating. Thanks for the info , I may look into the kompare also, cause it gets to be a pain babysitting the changes you make sometimes, mainly cause Im relatively new to linux so I dont know right off the top of my head if the update it says I need is really needed or not.I think if I could actually see a gui of the two that would in fact be easier I think.
